That's it, we want homemade from now on.

Hi Everyone. It's Sam, over my breakfast I was watching CNN where I heard about MORE recalls. Can you believe it? What's it going to take to make the people in charge crack down and give us animals more protection?!??!? I'm usually a pretty sedate hound, but this burns my buns. I hope nobody is hurt by this new stuff. :(

Here's the first one:

What's a pet owner to do when every day they are told a new pet food might kill their beloved furry friend?
The massive pet food recall seems to grow everyday, and pet owners are more concerned than ever about what is actually safe to feed to their pets.

The newest recall affects the following U.S. brands:
* Jerky Treats Beef Flavor Dog Snacks.
* Gravy Train Beef Sticks Dog Snacks.
* Pounce Meaty Morsels Moist Chicken Flavor Cat Treats.
* Ol' Roy Beef Flavor Jerky Strips Dog Treats.
* Ol' Roy Beef Flavor Snack Stick Dog Treats.

In addition to the 60 million products recalled from Menu Foods, Science Diet has also pulled its prescription Science Diet Cat food, and Alpo has pulled its Cuts and Gravy style dog food. This latest announcement is the first time dog and cat treats have been affected.

The concern is the ingredient wheat gluten which is found in some foods and may contain a deadly toxic called melamine. The FDA originally had sad that the problem was due to rat poison. Pet owners can check the ingredients list to find food that is made without wheat gluten. Many people are turning to organic pet foods, but retailers are having trouble keeping those brands stocked.

Signs of kidney failure to watch for in your pets include:

Lethargy
Vomiting
Drinking Too Much or Not Drinking At All
Change in Personality

If you suspect your animal may be sick, a veterinarian can perform a simple blood or urine test to see if your pet has been poisoned. A vet exam may cost as little as $30, a small price to pay for ensuring your pet's health.

Anyway, just wanted to post in case anyone missed it. She's going to have to get the recipe book out and make us some homemade treats.

Not our treats!!!!!! Luckily my treats aren't on that list! Maybe we should just start eating human food. Although they've been recalling that, too! I hope they figure out where this bad stuff is coming from so no more pets get sick.

It's just so scary. My mommy has started making me homemade food and using some safe dry food (Solid Gold). It's a lot yummier than the food she buys in the store. Mommy says that before store bought food was popular, all doggies ate what their mommies and daddies ate.

Scary stuff! We feed Blue Buffalo, Evangers, and Science Diet u/d. Thank goodness none of those have any of that nasty wheat gluten (actually they have no grains at all).

Makes you want to start cooking your OWN food!

The Brats eat Diamond Naturals food, no wheat gluten either. (the Senior 8+) I'm really happy with it and everything I've read.

As for the treats, I'm guilty of feeding them all kinds of junk. I think I'm going to find some homemade ones to switch to so I have some kind of better control. You just never know what's going to come out recalled next and I don't want to risk it.

Sam.. Thanks for keeping us pups posted. Thanksfully, my sister nor myself eat any of the food or treats on the list.

Thanks for posting this information. This stuff is crazy! We mostly get wheat-free stuff but it is really terrifying, eh? It has boosted our consumption of people food, though!

P.S. If there are any short-legged girls who would like to come by my house for a home-cooked meal I'd be happy to share (or at least let her watch while I eat).

Yup, my mom saw these. I have been on a homemade raw diet for 2 years now because I have food allergies and can't eat kibble. Mom was very glad, since she didn't have to worry about any of the dog food recalls.

The recall on the chicken jerky scared her because I do eat those, that's one of the few treats I can have, but I get a different brand. But she is thinking of getting a food dehydrator and making homemade chicken and beef treats for me out of human grade food.
